because our first responders encounter situations every day
where people are in need of help."
- "I use the book as a teaching tool to show my staff the
breadth and depth of resources available in our
community."

Spotlight: Child Protective Services
Child
protective services are programs that investigate reports of
child abuse, neglect or abandonment; document substantiated
cases; provide for the temporary placement of children who,
for their own protection, have been removed from the custody
of the adults who are responsible for their care; work with
families who are experiencing a problem with child abuse with
the objective of facilitating continued family unification or
reunification; and provide ongoing supportive services for
children in permanent placement. Every community has an
office in charge of protective services for children, and in
North Carolina these county offices are connected through the
state Division of Social Services (DSS). Their charge is
ensuring safe, permanent, nurturing families for children by
protecting them from abuse and neglect while attempting to
preserve the family unit. Check out this
Website for information on what you need to know about
child abuse and neglect, and contact your local child
