Digital Television TransitionTV

What You and Your Clients Need to Know

What is the digital television transition?
At midnight on February 17, 2009, all full-power television stations in the United States will stop broadcasting in analog and switch to 100% digital broadcasting. Digital broadcasting is intended to provide a clearer picture and more programming options and will free up airwaves for use by emergency responders.

What is the TV Converter Box Coupon Program?
Congress created the TV Converter Box Coupon Program for households wishing to keep using their analog TV sets after February 17, 2009. The Program allows U.S. households to obtain up to two coupons, each worth $40, that can be applied toward the cost of eligible converter boxes.  A TV connected to cable, satellite or other pay TV service does not require a TV converter box from this program.

Consumers have a variety of options, including:
1.  Keep your existing analog TV and purchase a TV converter box. A converter box plugs into your TV and will keep it working after Feb. 17, 2009.  The link below will provide information about the converter box coupons.
2.  Connect to cable, satellite or other pay service.
3.  Purchase a television with a digital tuner.

Adult Literacy Programs

Census data indicates that nearly one million adults in North Carolina lack a high school diploma and approximately one half million adult North Carolinians speak a language other than English at home.

Adult literacy programs are designed to enable adult learners to acquire the necessary basic skills - reading, writing, computation, speaking, and listening - to compete successfully in today's workplace, strengthen family foundations, and exercise full citizenship.

Do you know someone who could benefit from an adult literacy program?

Here are some local programs that might be able to help:

Literacy Council of Buncombe County (Buncombe & Madison County residents)
(828) 254-3442

Blue Ridge Literacy Council (Henderson County residents)
(828) 696-3811
